The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed the bars at its Principality Stadium home will close for the second half of Wales' three matches in 2022 in a bid to minimise anti-social behaviour. Last autumn, two pitch invaders broke on to the field at the famous venue in consecutive matches against and . In the second of those cases, Callum Rowe almost collided with Wales back Liam Williams and impacted significantly on the match as his presence caused a home attack to break down.

An hour into the game agains the Springboks, Rowe, 28 at the time of the incident, wandered onto the field for a £20 bet - and disrupted the game.

He was quickly chucked out after fans angrily threw their drinks at him and was later slapped with a lifetime ban from the ground.

Poor behaviour in the stands of the 74,000-seater venue, fans regularly getting up to go to the bar during the match and excessive drinking have long been a problem at Wales home games. After undertaking a detailed survey of customer feedback, the WRU has responded.  All Principality Stadium bars and food outlets will be shut after half time for the upcoming matches with Scotland, France and Italy.

In-stadium and online messaging will also emphasis the importance of responsible alcohol consumption.  Beer with a lower percentage of alcohol will also be phased into bars. 'We want our supporters to remain passionate and enthused and to continue to bring their best voices to Principality Stadium,' said WRU chief executive Steve Phillips.

'Throughout the pandemic it is our supporters who we and the Wales team have missed most.

But we also need them to behave responsibly and to encourage those around them to do the same. 'We have taken a series of measures which are designed to change a direction of travel from some quarters which was detected at our Autumn Nations Series matches. 'But do so without negatively impacting the experience of a hardcore and hugely significant base of supporters who make the Principality Stadium experience what it is.' The WRU introduced an alcohol-free zone at Principality Stadium in 2018 which seats 4,200 fans. 'We will be trialling a number of new measures which we hope will encourage improved behaviour from the recognised minority who risk spoiling the experience for those around them,' said Principality Stadium manager Mark Williams.  'There is a balancing act at play here. 'The last thing we want to do is get in the way of people's enjoyment, but we think these new measures will help ensure the greatest number of visitors have the very best time.
